M. S. Marks Design, Sustainable Interiors, was founded six years ago in response to my growing interest in environmentally conscious interior design. I had spent the previous three years developing the interior specifications and furnishing eleven model apartments for “The Solaire”, the first environmentally advanced high-rise residence in the united States, -- Located in Battery Park City in Downtown Manhattan. My work on The Solaire gave me the opportunity to develop an approach, a collection of distributors & manufacturers and armed me with the courage to introduce an Interior Design Firm focusing on high-end environmentally sensitive interiors.



At M. S. Marks Design we strive to create a harmonious and well balanced sense of place, but an awareness of the content of products we use in an interior is also a primary consideration. All adhesives, paints and cabinetry must be free of toxic components to limit off-gassing and insure a cleaner indoor air quality. Recycled content and recyclability is naturally considered as well, even in the most high end applications. By supporting companies that are actively pursuing environmental programs we help not only those companies but contribute to the overall health of the environment in which we all live. Further we seek out companies whose business practices contribute to the greater good or encourage the development of self-sustaining industries in areas of the world that are struggling to improve their quality of life. Keeping abreast of developments and advances in the technology dynamic field can be daunting but M. S. Marks Design is diligently curious and dedicated to this endeavor.



During the past few years we have taken a particular interest in three specific types of interiors that seem well-fitted for this approach. The first, Healthy Gym focuses on exercise facilities. The second, Healthy Play is an approach to improving the indoor environment for our children in both child care facilities and schools. The third, Healthy Doctor is an attempt to impress upon doctors the importance high quality indoor environments for the recovery and well-being of their patients.
With bodd Fitness I have had the chance to combine two of these focuses and demonstrate with a multi-layered approach Sustainable Interiors can be both healthful and beautiful. Jennifer Ercklentz has been an inspiration to me with her enthusiasm and encouragement, always excited by the latest idea and impressed by its execution.
